Best Combi Boilers UK 2026: 6 Engineer Picks Compared by Flow Rate, Warranty and Price

Quick answer: what is the best combi boiler in the UK in 2026?

For most UK homes with one bathroom, the best combi boiler in 2026 is the Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000, with the Vaillant ecoTEC plus close behind. For the best value, choose the Ideal Logic Max Combi2 or Baxi 800 Combi 2, both of which carry up to 10 years of warranty. For homes with two bathrooms, choose a high output model such as the Ideal Vogue Max C40 (16.4 litres per minute) or Vaillant ecoTEC plus 838 (15.9 litres per minute). Expect to pay roughly £2,000 to £3,800 fitted for a like-for-like swap. The right pick for you comes down to hot water flow rate, your mains water supply and who installs it, not just the badge on the front.

What is a combi boiler, and who should not buy one?

A combi (combination) boiler heats your radiators and makes hot water on demand straight from the mains, so there is no hot water cylinder or cold water tank in the loft. It is the most popular boiler type in the UK because it is compact, cheaper to install and wastes no energy keeping a tank of water hot.

A combi is not the right choice for every home. Think twice if:

  • You have two or more bathrooms that are regularly used at the same time.
  • Your mains water flow is weak (see the bucket test below).
  • You plan to add solar thermal panels or switch to a heat pump soon, both of which need a cylinder.

If any of those apply, read our guide to combi vs system vs regular boilers before you buy.

The 6 best combi boilers in the UK for 2026

1. Worcester Bosch Greenstar 4000: best all-rounder

The Greenstar 4000 is the boiler we fit most often in one bathroom homes across Hertford, Ware and St Albans. Worcester designed it for small to medium homes, and it copes well where mains pressure is on the low side. It has a clear colour display, a “Quick Tap” setting that cuts wasted water, and it is one of the quieter combis on the market.

  • Outputs: 25kW and 30kW hot water versions.
  • Flow rate: 9 litres per minute (25kW) and 10.8 litres per minute (30kW) at a 40°C rise.
  • Warranty: up to 10 years when fitted by a Worcester Accredited Installer with a Greenstar System Filter.
  • Watch out for: Worcester quotes flow at a 40°C rise while most rivals use 35°C, so the 4000 looks weaker on paper than it is. Converted to a 35°C rise, the 30kW model delivers about 12.3 litres per minute.

Verdict: the safest choice for a flat, terraced or semi-detached house with one bathroom.

2. Vaillant ecoTEC plus: best for efficiency and smart controls

Vaillant’s ecoTEC plus has a wide modulation range, which means it can turn itself down very low on mild days instead of switching on and off. Paired with Vaillant’s sensoCOMFORT or an outdoor weather sensor, it runs at lower flow temperatures and stays in condensing mode for longer, which is where real gas savings come from.

  • Outputs: 825, 832, 835 and 838 models.
  • Flow rate: 13.0 litres per minute (832) and 15.9 litres per minute (838) at a 35°C rise.
  • Warranty: 5 years as standard, 7 years when registered by a Vaillant Advance installer, and up to 10 years with selected installers.

Verdict: ideal if you care about running costs and want proper weather compensation, not just a smart thermostat.

3. Ideal Logic Max Combi2: best value

Ideal is one of Britain’s biggest boiler makers, and the Logic Max Combi2 is its updated mid-range combi. Parts are easy to source, engineers know it inside out, and the price is usually a few hundred pounds below the premium German brands.

  • Outputs: C24, C30 and C35.
  • Flow rate: 12.4 litres per minute (C30).
  • Warranty: up to 10 years.

Verdict: the best balance of price, warranty and parts availability for landlords and first-time buyers.

4. Ideal Vogue Max C40: best for two bathroom homes

If your household regularly runs a shower while someone fills a basin or the dishwasher, you need flow, not just kilowatts. The Vogue Max C40 is one of the highest output combis on the market, with a stainless steel heat exchanger and one of the longest warranties available.

  • Output: 40kW hot water (32kW to the radiators).
  • Flow rate: 16.4 litres per minute at a 35°C rise.
  • Warranty: up to 12 years through Ideal’s installer scheme.
  • Watch out for: the boiler can only deliver what your mains supplies. A 40kW combi on a 12 litre per minute mains is wasted money.

Verdict: the best combi for a bigger home, as long as the mains flow test backs it up. For homes with three bathrooms, a system boiler is still the better answer.

5. Viessmann Vitodens 100-W: best build quality

Viessmann uses its own stainless steel Inox-Radial heat exchanger and a combustion control system that adjusts to the gas supply automatically. It is quiet, compact and well regarded by engineers for long term reliability.

  • Outputs: 26kW, 30kW and 35kW.
  • Flow rate: up to 14.3 litres per minute (35kW) at a 35°C rise.
  • Warranty: 7 years as standard, with longer cover available.

Verdict: a premium choice for homeowners who want a boiler they will not think about for 15 years.

6. Baxi 800 Combi 2: best budget pick

Baxi’s 800 Combi 2 gives you a 10 year parts and labour warranty at a lower price than most rivals. It has a built-in pre-heated condensate trap to reduce winter freezing, a common cause of January breakdown calls.

  • Outputs: 824, 830 and 836.
  • Flow rate: 10.2, 12.2 and 15.0 litres per minute at a 35°C rise.
  • Warranty: 10 years parts and labour.

Verdict: the best combi if budget is tight but you still want a long warranty.

Heat output for the radiators is a separate question from hot water. Most UK homes need far less heating output than the combi’s headline figure, which is why a proper heat loss check matters.

Why flow rate matters more than kW

Flow rate is how many litres of hot water a combi can deliver each minute at a set temperature rise. It is the single most useful number when comparing combis, yet many buying guides skip it.

Three things our engineers explain on almost every survey:

  1. Check the temperature rise. Manufacturers quote flow at either a 35°C or a 40°C rise. The same boiler looks about 14% stronger at 35°C. To compare fairly, multiply a 40°C figure by 40 and divide by 35. That is how the Greenstar 4000 30kW goes from 10.8 to about 12.3 litres per minute.
  2. Winter is the real test. Mains water can drop to around 5°C to 8°C in a cold snap, so the boiler has to lift it further to reach a comfortable 40°C shower. Flow at the tap falls in January, which is why a borderline combi feels fine in summer and weak in winter.
  3. Your mains sets the ceiling. A combi cannot deliver more water than the pipe brings in. Try the bucket test: time how long your kitchen cold tap, fully open, takes to fill a 10 litre bucket. Under 40 seconds (15+ litres per minute) is a good supply for a large combi. Over 60 seconds (under 10 litres per minute) means a big combi will disappoint, and you should talk to us about the supply pipe or a system boiler.

A typical mixer shower uses 8 to 10 litres per minute, so a 12 litre combi can run one good shower and a little else at the same time. That simple maths saves a lot of disappointed showers.

How much does a new combi boiler cost in 2026?

Most homeowners pay between £2,000 and £3,800 for a like-for-like combi replacement fitted, depending on brand, output and how much pipework needs changing. Typical extras:

  • Converting from a tank system to a combi: usually adds £1,000 to £2,000 because the cylinder and loft tanks come out.
  • Moving the boiler to a new room: typically £500 to £800 or more.
  • Power flush on an older, sludgy system: around £300 to £500.

Will a new combi boiler cut my gas bill?

Usually yes, if you are replacing an older non-condensing boiler. Here is the honest maths using the Ofgem price cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026 (gas at 7.97p per kWh):

  • A typical home uses about 11,500 kWh of gas a year (Ofgem’s typical domestic consumption value). At 7.97p that is about £917 a year before standing charges.
  • Swapping a 75% efficient old boiler for a modern combi running at around 90% means you need about 17% less gas for the same heat.
  • That is a saving of roughly £150 a year, more in bigger or colder homes.

The catch: a condensing boiler only hits its rated efficiency when the water returning from your radiators is below about 55°C. Leave the flow temperature at 75°C or 80°C and you lose much of the benefit. Ask your installer to set the flow temperature lower and fit weather compensation where possible. It costs little and often matters more than the brand.

What should a good combi installation include?

The brand is only half of the story. In our experience the installation decides how long a boiler lasts and whether the warranty holds. Every combi we fit includes:

  • Boiler Plus compliant controls. In England, a new combi must have time and temperature controls plus one extra energy saving measure: weather compensation, load compensation, flue gas heat recovery, or a smart thermostat with automation and optimisation.
  • A system clean and magnetic filter. Most manufacturers require both for the extended warranty.
  • Scale protection. Building Regulations (Part L) require the hot water circuit of a combi to be treated where mains water hardness is above 200ppm. Much of Hertfordshire and north London has hard water, so a scale reducer is not optional here. Check your postcode with your water supplier.
  • Warranty registration and Gas Safe notification. You should receive a Building Regulations compliance certificate after the job.
  • Annual servicing. Almost every extended warranty requires a yearly service by a Gas Safe engineer. Our boiler service and cover plans keep that on track automatically, and our guide on whether boiler cover is worth it explains the options.

Is it still worth fitting a gas combi boiler in 2026?

For most existing homes, yes. There is no ban on replacing a working gas boiler in an existing home, and you can still buy and fit a new gas combi today. We explain the rules in are gas boilers being banned in 2026.

That said, if your home is well insulated and you have room for a cylinder, an air source heat pump with the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant can be a strong alternative. Our guide to air source heat pump costs shows the real numbers so you can compare both routes side by side.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most reliable combi boiler in the UK?

Worcester Bosch, Vaillant and Viessmann are consistently rated the most reliable combi boiler brands by UK engineers, with Ideal and Baxi offering long warranties at a lower price. In practice, reliability depends as much on the installation, water treatment and annual servicing as on the brand.

Which combi boiler has the best warranty?

The Ideal Vogue Max offers up to 12 years, and Viessmann’s Vitodens range can be extended to 12 years. The Baxi 800 Combi 2 includes 10 years parts and labour, and the Worcester Greenstar 4000 and Ideal Logic Max offer up to 10 years. Extended warranties usually need an accredited installer, a system filter and an annual service.

What size combi boiler do I need for a 3 bed house?

Most 3 bedroom homes with one bathroom suit a combi rated around 30kW for hot water, giving roughly 12 to 13 litres per minute. With an en-suite as well, aim for a 35kW to 40kW model delivering 14 to 16 litres per minute, provided your mains water flow can support it.

Can a combi boiler run two showers at once?

Only a high output combi on a strong mains supply can run two showers at once, and even then both will feel weaker. A combi delivering 16 litres per minute can just about run two low flow showers. If two showers at once is a daily need, a system boiler with an unvented cylinder is the better choice.

How long does a combi boiler last?

A well installed, annually serviced combi boiler typically lasts 10 to 15 years. Hard water, sludge in the system and skipped services are the most common reasons a combi fails early.

Are combi boilers cheaper to run?

Yes, for most small and medium homes. A combi only heats water when you turn on a tap, so there is no heat lost from a stored cylinder. In larger homes with heavy hot water use, a system boiler can be just as efficient.

How long does it take to fit a new combi boiler?

A like-for-like combi swap usually takes one day. Converting from a tank system to a combi normally takes two to three days.
